Becky Falls

You'll hear Becky Falls before you see them - that constant roar of water tumbling down the rocky gorge cuts through the woodland quiet near Newton Abbot. It's a proper waterfall, genuine and unspectacular in the best way, dropping through a steep wooded valley in the Dartmoor foothills.

The walk in takes you through ancient woodland, and there's a decent scramble down to the base where the force of the water is properly impressive, especially after rain. The rocks are slick and rough underfoot - not one for fancy shoes. You can paddle in the plunge pool if you're brave enough; the water's cold enough to take your breath away.

This is miles better than the tourist-trap versions you find elsewhere. It's free to visit, no visitor centre nonsense, just you and the falls. The whole thing takes about an hour depending on how long you linger. Spring's the best time - more water volume - though summer crowds are thinner during weekdays.

It fits well into a broader Dartmoor exploration from Oakmoor Touring Park, which sits about five miles away. You could couple it with a proper moorland walk or village potter around Newton Abbot. It won't take a full day, but it's the kind of stop that stays with you - genuine, uncomfortable in parts, and worth every muddy step. Solo walkers and serious types get the most from it; those after manicured attractions might find it a bit wild.
