Bedgrove Park

The reed beds at Bedgrove Park draw you in quietly. This Buckinghamshire nature reserve sits just outside Tring, where the landscape flattens into proper wetland - the sort of place where a morning walk turns into an hour of birdwatching whether you meant to or not.

It's a working reserve, not a manicured visitor attraction. You'll find viewing areas dotted about, and the paths are straightforward enough, but this isn't somewhere to expect facilities or visitor centres. What you get instead are herons, reed warblers in season, and the particular peace that comes from standing still near water. Winter brings visiting wildfowl; spring and summer are crackling with breeding activity if you know what to listen for.

This suits walkers and genuine nature enthusiasts far more than families expecting entertainment. Children will get bored within twenty minutes unless they're already keen on birds. The appeal is slow and observational - binoculars essential, patience required.

If you're based at one of the nearby sites - Hill Farm Camping is excellent and only 3.5 miles away, or Chiltern Yurts if you want something with more atmosphere - Bedgrove works as a morning outing alongside the bigger attractions Tring has to offer. It's free, as far as I can establish, and you can spend anything from forty minutes to a full morning depending on what you spot. Worth combining with a proper walk elsewhere in the Chilterns rather than treating as a destination in itself.
