Beinn na h-Iolaire

The walk up Beinn na h-Iolaire isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to earn respect. You're looking at a proper Highland peak that rises above Inverness with views stretching across the Moray Firth on a clear day. Most people tackle it as a half-day outing from the city - a solid three to four hours up and down if you're moving at a decent pace.

What makes it worthwhile is the isolation. This isn't Ben Nevis. You won't queue for a summit selfie. The path climbs through rough moorland and scattered trees, and the higher you go, the more the Highlands reveal themselves in every direction. On a good day the visibility is genuinely impressive. On a grey day - which is often - it's moody and atmospheric in a way that feels properly Scottish.

It suits walkers who want a real climb without technical difficulty. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though the initial gradient will sort out anyone not used to hills. Bring decent boots. The ground gets boggy and loose underfoot, particularly higher up.

Free to access, naturally - there's no gate or fee here. The nearest car park is a short drive from Inverness, though you'll need to check current access details locally. If you're based at Tomatin Glamping Pods just down the road, it makes for a proper morning's work before lunch. Worth doing, but go with realistic expectations. This is a hill walk, not a tourist attraction.
