Bell Wood

You'll find yourself walking into an ancient woodland that feels properly tucked away from the main tourist drag around Cumbria. Bell Wood is a forest thick with character - the sort of place where you lose phone signal within five minutes and that feels like a feature, not a bug.

The main draw here is straightforward: woodland walking through mature trees with plenty of paths to choose from. Some routes are gentle ambles suitable for families with younger kids, while others push deeper into the forest and demand proper boots. The canopy is dense enough that even on drizzly days it stays reasonably dry underfoot, and in autumn the colour is genuinely worth timing a visit around.

Historically minded walkers will appreciate that you're moving through land with serious roots - though don't expect interpretation boards spelling everything out. You'll be doing the discovering yourself, which some will love and others will find frustrating.

The reality is this isn't a destination you make a special trip for from Manchester or Liverpool. But if you're already caravan-based at Old Park Wood, which sits a short drive away, it's absolutely the sort of spot to spend a morning before lunch. Two hours gives you a proper explore without feeling rushed. No entrance fee as far as anyone can tell - it's just woodland you can access.

Go when the ground is firm rather than waterlogged. Bring a map or download the route beforehand. It's genuinely good, but only if you're into actual woodland walking rather than café culture.
