Belvoir Park Forest

The forest sprawls across 150-odd acres on the outskirts of Lisburn, and it's the kind of place that feels properly separate from the city despite being barely five miles from Belfast. You get woodland trails that actually go somewhere - not just a loop around a car park - with sections dedicated to different habitats. Beech, oak, and conifer stands frame views towards the Castlereagh hills, and there's a decent network of paths ranging from gentle riverside walks to steeper climbs through denser woodland.

Walkers will have the most satisfying time here. The routes are well-maintained and marked, so you're not constantly checking your phone, and there's genuine variety depending on how long you've got. Kids will do well if they're reasonably mobile - it's not flat, but it's not a relentless slog either. The forest itself is the draw; there aren't facilities or attractions within it, so don't expect a visitor centre or play area.

Admission is free, and there's car park access. Allow a minimum of 90 minutes for a proper circuit, more if you want to explore the different trail options. Spring and early autumn are best - the woodland canopy isn't completely oppressive, and you'll see actual wildlife rather than just hear it.

If you're bunking at The Pods at Streamvale or Dundonald Touring Caravan Park, this fits perfectly as a morning or afternoon outing. It's close enough to slot into a broader day exploring Lisburn and the surrounding area without eating into travel time.
