Benton Quarry Park

The old quarry at Benton sits like a secret that locals have been quietly keeping to themselves. What you're looking at is a flooded former sandstone pit that's transformed into something rather special - clear water reflecting the cliff faces, the whole thing ringed by mature trees and walking trails that actually reward the leg work. It's not a manicured attraction with gift shops and interpretation boards; it's a proper industrial heritage site that nature's reclaimed.

Walkers absolutely thrive here. The paths loop around the water's edge and climb up onto the surrounding woodland, giving you decent views back across the quarry without ever feeling strenuous. You can easily spend a couple of hours picking your way around, and the place gets quieter the further you venture from the car park. Worth knowing: there's no formal café or facilities, so bring your own water and a packed lunch if you're planning a longer session.

It's free to visit, which makes it excellent value. Families with older kids who can manage uneven terrain will get on well with it - younger ones might find the appeal limited once they've circumnavigated the water once. Benton sits just inland from Whitley Bay, making it an easy add-on if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts or the Old Hartley Campsite. Pair it with a coastal walk down to the beach at Whitley Bay itself and you've got a proper day sorted. The quarry's best visited when the light's good - late afternoon autumn light is particularly excellent here, turning the water bronze and the sandstone warm gold.
