Berrington Plantation

The plantation sprawls across decent acreage just outside Shrewsbury, a proper mix of mature woodland and more recent planting that's grown into itself over the decades. You're walking through mixed forest here - oak, beech, conifers - with the sort of dappled light that makes you forget the car park exists. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy stretches appear after rain, so decent boots matter.

It's the kind of place walkers genuinely enjoy rather than somewhere that needs much else to justify the trip. No visitor centre, no café - just trees and quiet. You'll see the woodland birds if you're lucky, and the canopy's thick enough that even on grey Shropshire days it feels removed from things. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper loop; half that if you've only got a quick hour spare.

Families with young kids might find it a touch dull without a specific trail to follow or something to hunt for - it's a wood, and if you're after play equipment or structured activities, you'll be disappointed. Serious walkers and anyone after a bit of forest peace will rate it properly. The nearby campsite options - Mill Farm just 5.5 miles away, Lower Hill a mile further - make it an easy add-on to a broader park holiday without needing to trek far from base. Combine it with a walk into Shrewsbury town centre afterwards for a proper day out.
