Bessy's Wood

Bessy's Wood is a proper little woodland just outside Gloucester - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Ancient trees, decent walking paths, and enough shade that it stays cool even when the city's sweltering. The wood runs along a stream in places, which keeps things green and the air properly fresh.

It's ideal for a couple of hours of gentle rambling, especially if you're staying at Passage Farm Caravan & Campsite just up the road (barely over a mile away). Families with younger kids will find it manageable - no steep climbs, plenty of things to spot if you're the observant type. Older children might get a bit restless after an hour unless they're keen on wildlife spotting or collecting fallen branches for fort-building.

Walkers will appreciate the network of trails threading through, though don't expect dramatic vistas or anything. It's intimate woodland rather than spectacular. The stream sections are where it properly comes alive - moss-covered banks, the sound of running water doing its thing.

Bring proper shoes if you've had rain; the paths can get boggy. Respect the trees and leave the place as you find it. It works well as a morning's diversion when you're basing yourself at one of the nearby sites like The Roost Retreats or Apple Orchard, both within easy striking distance. Doesn't require booking or advance planning - just turn up and walk. The wood's at its best in spring or autumn when the light filters through differently.
