Bettisfield Moss

Bettisfield Moss is one of those places that sneaks up on you. A few miles outside Ellesmere, this lowland moss - a blanket bog, technically - sits quietly in the Shropshire landscape, and unless you're into botany or serious birdwatching, you might wonder what the fuss is about. Then you step onto the boardwalk and realise you're standing on something genuinely rare.

It's a working nature reserve, the sort of place where sphagnum moss and heather actually thrive, and the birdlife is proper outstanding. Redpolls, crossbills, and golden plovers turn up depending on the season. In winter, it can feel quite austere and beautiful in an understated way. Spring brings new growth and migrating species. There's a network of paths - some on boardwalk, others on the firmer edges - so you're not sinking into bog with every step, though it does feel boggy enough to remind you what you're walking on.

This is squarely for nature enthusiasts rather than casual day-trippers. Families might enjoy an hour if the kids are into spotting birds, but don't expect theme park energy. Allow two to three hours if you're doing it properly with binoculars and a field guide.

Stay at Abbey Green Farm or Fernwood, both within two miles, and you've got a solid base for exploring Ellesmere's lake walks and meres. Bettisfield works best as part of a broader Shropshire nature interest rather than a standalone destination.
