Betty's Pond

The water at Betty's Pond sits glass-calm on most mornings, reflecting the trees that line its edges - this is a proper little spot if you're after peace and quiet without the fuss of larger reservoirs. It's a small lake near Derby that's clearly been somebody's labour of love, with good access paths and enough space to feel properly separated from the world for an hour or two.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it. The paths are manageable, and you'll spot mallards, coots, and if you're lucky, herons fishing in the shallows. Families with young kids might find it a touch underwhelming if they're expecting drama - there's no café, no play area, just water and woodland. That's rather the point though.

You can walk it in under an hour, maybe longer if you dawdle and bring binoculars. It's free to visit and open to the public year-round, though it's best in spring when the trees are coming into leaf, or autumn when migratory birds pass through.

If you're camped at Broadleaves Glamping or Field of Dreams just down the road - both five-star rated sites - this makes a decent morning walk before breakfast. Conkers, a bit further afield, could slot it into a larger day out exploring the wider area. Betty's Pond won't blow your mind, but it's the kind of place that restores something. Worth the detour if you're already in Leicestershire.
