Big Drop Not

The River Loddon near Wokingham has a modest weir that locals call Big Drop Not - a tongue-in-cheek name for what is, frankly, not much of a drop at all. It's the sort of spot where someone decided the irony was worth naming it, and it's stuck. You'll find it tucked away in the Loddon Valley, just outside Bracknell, and it's genuinely useful if you're walking the river path rather than a destination in itself.

What you're looking at is a small cascade where the river tumbles over a low ledge - maybe two or three metres at most. On a decent flow day after rain it's got a bit of character, but come summer and it's barely noticeable. The surrounding woodland is the real draw. Walkers heading between Wokingham and Bracknell use this stretch regularly, and it marks a decent turning point for a circular riverside route.

It's free, obviously, and costs nothing but time. Allow twenty minutes if you're stopping for photos, though honestly five will do unless the water's particularly lively. The walk in is gentle enough for families with older kids, though there's not much to hold younger children's attention for long.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Warfield Park or California Chalet are both within reach - it's worth combining with a proper walk along the Loddon rather than treating it as a standalone visit. Think of it as a halfway point rather than a destination. Go for the river walk, not the weir.
