Big Ling Spinney

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist attraction, Big Ling Spinney sits just outside Barrow upon Soar and delivers exactly what you'd hope for - dense trees, quiet paths, and the kind of peace you don't often find in the East Midlands. It's a small forest, maybe 20 minutes across if you wander, with mixed woodland and decent woodland flora depending on season. Spring brings bluebells, autumn the expected colour.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming after 15 minutes - there's no playground or visitor centre, just trees and footpaths. But if you're after an hour's amble to clear your head, or you're staying at Hill Top Caravan Park or Ragdale Glamping nearby and want a morning constitutional, it's worth knowing about.

Free to access, no gates or tickets that I could find. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy patches are guaranteed after rain. Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you're not rushing.

What makes it useful rather than unmissable is its location. Within striking distance of Charnwood Forest Country Park and the wider Leicestershire countryside, it works as a decent addition to a week's caravan holiday rather than a standalone destination. You're looking at gentle woodland, not dramatic landscapes. The trees are the draw here - old specimens, decent canopy cover, and enough cover to feel properly removed from the road nearby.

Go if you're after quiet. Skip if you need something more substantial.
