Big Wood

Walk into Big Wood and you're immediately swallowed by ancient beech and oak. It's proper woodland - the kind where light filters through in dusty shafts and the ground squelches underfoot after rain. The forest sprawls across Buckinghamshire near Watford, offering miles of quiet paths that feel a world away from the commuter towns nearby.

This is walker territory. The trails wind through dense woodland, opening occasionally onto clearings where you can actually see sky. It's not a manicured country estate walk - there's real wildness here. Families with young kids will manage the easier routes fine, though terrain can be muddy and uneven. Older children who fancy a proper hike will get more from it. You're looking at anything from 45 minutes for a gentle loop to several hours if you explore properly.

The wood changes character through the seasons. Spring brings bluebells and bird activity; autumn turns it into a proper golden cathedral of leaves. Winter is stark but atmospheric. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and decent boots.

If you're based at Wyatts Covert Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite five miles away, Big Wood makes an excellent half-day excursion. It's the antidote to structured park life - just you, trees, and however long you want to wander. Worth the detour if you're serious about woodland walking rather than tick-box attractions.
