Bincombe Wood

Walking into Bincombe Wood feels like stepping into someone's private estate - all tall beeches and clear sightlines, the sort of forest where you can actually see where you're going. It's proper woodland, not the dense tangle you sometimes get, which makes it genuinely pleasant for an afternoon ramble.

There's not much infrastructure here, which is either its best feature or its worst depending on what you want. No visitor centre, no café, no marked trails with colour-coded signs. What you get instead is open access to decent walking through mixed woodland a few miles south of Malmesbury. The paths are reasonably well-trodden and the ground's firm underfoot most of the time.

Families with older kids will get more from it than those with toddlers in buggies - you're looking at proper walking rather than a gentle loop. An hour or two here works well as part of a larger Wiltshire afternoon, not as a destination in itself. History buffs might find the bones of the woodland interesting, but there's no dramatic Roman ruin or ancient monument to anchor a visit.

If you're staying at Burton Hill Caravan Park or the glamping setup at Whychurch Farm, both within striking distance, this fills a gap on a day when the weather's reasonable and you want to stretch your legs without driving far. The real value here is the lack of crowds - you won't queue, won't pay an entrance fee, and genuinely might have the wood to yourself on a weekday morning.
