Bingham Linear Park

The old railway line that cuts through Bingham has been transformed into something genuinely useful - a proper walking and cycling route that actually goes somewhere instead of looping back on itself. You get a good three miles or so of tree-lined path, the kind that feels properly separated from the world even though you're never far from Nottinghamshire's rolling countryside.

It's best in late spring when the canopy fills in completely, though autumn does its bit too with the usual colour show. The surface is solid underfoot - no ankle-turning gravel nonsense - which means it works for families with pushchairs and anyone who doesn't fancy struggling in their boots. Most people allow an hour each way if they're ambling, less if they're properly striding.

This is walker and cyclist territory really, though the open sections will keep kids occupied enough for a short spell. Birdwatchers might spot something worth noting depending on the season. It's free, naturally, and open as long as it's daylight.

If you're staying at Janson Fishery Caravan & Camping just down the road, this makes an ideal afternoon stretch without needing to drive anywhere. Boat Lane Caravan Park is a bit further out but still within striking distance. The route doesn't have the drama of a proper country walk - no sudden vistas or dramatic descents - but that's rather the point. It's a reliable, pleasant bit of green space for moving your legs without faffing about with maps or worrying you've taken a wrong turn.
