Bircham's Wood

The woodland around Newent has real character, and Bircham's Wood is the sort of place you'd stumble upon while exploring the Forest of Dean's quieter edges. It's a proper forest walk rather than a manicured attraction - the kind where you're genuinely surrounded by trees, not just popping in for twenty minutes.

What you get here is decent cover for a woodland ramble. The paths wind through established woodland, and it's the sort of spot that feels properly separate from the tourist trails even though it's only minutes from Newent. Good for a couple of hours if you're serious about walking, or a gentler hour's wander if you've got kids in tow who aren't marathon hikers yet.

Families with primary school age children will find it engaging enough - there are trees to spot, stream crossings if you're lucky with recent rain, and enough variation to stop it feeling like you're trudging the same path twice. It's less manicured than some Forest of Dean sites, so teenagers might find it more interesting than the honeypot attractions.

You'll want decent footwear because the ground gets muddy, especially mid-week after wet weather. The site itself is free to access as far as I can tell - there's no obvious visitor infrastructure, just the wood. It works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon outing if you're based at any of the glamping sites around Newent like Up Sticks or Mike's Meadow, breaking up your holiday without eating the whole day.
