Birchington Promenade

The seafront at Birchington stretches out properly, with that particular mix of pebbles and sand that makes Kent's coast feel distinctly unglamorous in the best possible way. You're looking at a mile or so of promenade where people actually walk rather than pose for Instagram, which is refreshing. The nature reserve element means there are bits of saltmarsh and shingle habitat that attract waders and the occasional interesting bird if you know what you're looking for.

It's the kind of place walkers genuinely enjoy - flat, straightforward, with enough interest to stop you checking your phone every five minutes. Families with young kids get bored after an hour if the tide's out and there's nothing happening, but if you've got binoculars and patience, the bird-watching's solid. The pebbles are loose underfoot, so proper shoes matter.

There's nothing fancy here - no cafes built into the promenade, no facilities that I could find. You'll want to grab supplies from Birchington town centre first. The beauty is you can combine this with the Dog & Duck Leisure Park if you're staying locally, using it as a morning walk before heading back for lunch.

Go on a calm day when the light's good. High summer gets crowded with families just messing about on the beach, which dilutes the quietness that makes it worth visiting. Winter's actually better - fewer people, more birds, proper atmospheric. Allow 60-90 minutes if you're actually paying attention to what you're looking at.
