Birdwood Coppice

Dense oak and ash trees tower overhead as you step into this working woodland just outside Westbury-on-Severn. Birdwood Coppice is proper old-school forestry - the kind where paths wind between traditional coppiced hazel and you'll spot evidence of centuries-old woodland management. The canopy filters sunlight into dappled patterns that shift with every breeze, creating that cathedral-like atmosphere that only ancient woods can deliver.

Walkers and families with older children will get the most from exploring here. The paths aren't buggy-friendly, and younger kids might find the lack of play equipment or obvious attractions a bit dull after half an hour. But for those who appreciate the quieter side of nature, it's a lovely spot to lose yourself for an hour or two.

Being a working coppice, you're free to wander the main paths though access may vary depending on forestry work. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic, while autumn offers that satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot.
