Black Hill

The walk up Black Hill rewards you with views that stretch across Mid Wales in proper weather - moorland rolling away in every direction, and on clear days you can pick out the Radnor Forest and beyond. It's a straightforward climb from Presteigne, gaining height steadily rather than brutally, which means it suits most reasonably fit walkers without being a trudge.

What you're getting here is wild, open moorland rather than forest or dramatic rock formations. The summit itself is fairly bare - a cairn marks the top - but the real appeal is the walk itself and what you see from up there. The paths are well-enough worn that you won't struggle with navigation, though you'll want decent boots in wet conditions. Allow two to three hours for a there-and-back trip, depending on fitness and how long you fancy standing about enjoying the view.

Historically minded types will appreciate the moorland character - this is proper upland Wales, the sort of landscape that's changed little in centuries. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit relentless without a destination to aim for beyond "the top".

If you're staying at Hush Hush Glamping or Rockbridge Park, both within four miles, this makes a decent half-day outing that breaks up a broader exploration of Powys. It's free to walk, naturally, and the nearest facilities are back in Presteigne. Go midweek if you can - weekends can get surprisingly busy.
