Black Loch

The water at Black Loch sits dark and still, ringed by conifer woodland that drops steeply to the shore. It's a proper Scottish loch in miniature - nothing dramatic, but atmospheric in that quiet way the Lowlands do so well, just outside Newton Stewart.

You can walk the perimeter easily enough, though the path isn't formal and the ground gets boggy in patches. It takes about forty minutes to loop it if you dawdle, which you will. Fishermen come for brown trout, and in winter the place has an almost melancholy beauty - all reflected grey sky and the occasional heron. Summer's busier but still peaceful.

Families with young children might find it a bit anticlimactic after twenty minutes; there's no café, no facilities, no spectacle. Walkers and keen birdwatchers will get proper value though. Photographers too - that dark water and surrounding woods photograph well when the light's right, and it's the kind of spot where you might actually see something wild without crowds spoiling it.

Free to visit, and it works well as a morning outing if you're based at Three Lochs Holiday Park just down the road or Galloway Forest Holiday Park nearby. Don't expect drama. Expect quiet, decent walking, and a real sense of being somewhere genuinely rural. It's the sort of place you remember less for what you saw and more for how you felt being there.
