Black Plantation is a proper working forest just outside Pickering where you can actually walk without paying an entrance fee or booking ahead. Spring and autumn are your best bets weatherwise. Allow two hours if you're taking it leisurely, less if you're just doing a quick circuit. There's no cafe, so bring supplies. It costs nothing to enter, which is increasingly rare, so worth taking advantage of when you're in the area.
