Blackaburn Lough

A shallow moorland lake that sits quietly between Hexham and the Pennines, Blackaburn Lough is the sort of place you'll stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - which is precisely why it's worth the drive. The water reflects the open sky like a sheet of grey glass, ringed by rough grassland and low hills that feel properly remote despite being just a few miles from civilisation.

This is walking territory, full stop. There's a decent circuit around the lough that takes about forty minutes, and the paths are manageable even in slightly boggy conditions. Birdwatchers come here regularly - you'll spot mallards, curlews, and if you're lucky, something rarer. Photographers find the light here moody and forgiving, especially on overcast days when the water and sky merge into one.

It's not a place for families expecting picnic facilities or a café. There's nothing but the water, the moorland, and the wind. Bring proper waterproofs and good boots. Allow two hours if you're doing the full loop at a leisurely pace, longer if you want to sit about with binoculars.
