Blacon Library sits on the outskirts of Chester, just across the border into Flintshire, and it's the sort of place you'd pop into if you're already in the area rather than plan a special trip for. It's a proper community library - the kind with reasonably stocked shelves, a handful of computers, and that particular smell of old carpet and furniture polish that all local libraries seem to share.

The main draw here is practical rather than thrilling. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Fir Trees is barely a mile away, and Oakwood Farm not much further - it's genuinely useful for picking up a book or two, checking your email, or letting the kids loose on the children's section on a rainy afternoon. Don't expect the grand architecture or rare collections of a cathedral library. This is functional public service, not a destination.

Access and times aren't straightforward to pin down online, so ring ahead before you trek over. Admission is almost certainly free, which is just as well given the modest offering. Allow 30 minutes unless you're a serious browser. If you're caravan-hopping around Chester and the surrounding parks, it's worth knowing it exists - one of those safety-valve stops when the weather turns grim and cabin fever sets in. But be honest: you're visiting for the practical access, not the atmosphere.
