Blairhall Wood

Blairhall Wood is a proper Fife woodland, the sort of place you stumble into expecting a quick circuit and end up spending half the afternoon just wandering. It's all ancient broadleaf trees - oak, ash, beech - with a good network of paths that wind through without being overly manicured. The light filters through nicely in summer, and there's enough undergrowth to feel like you've actually left Dunfermline behind, even though the town's only a handful of miles away.

Walkers will get the most from it. Nothing strenuous, but the paths are proper woodland trails rather than park loops. On a damp autumn day, when the canopy's turning and the ground's soft with leaves, it's genuinely worth the trip. Kids won't complain about it either - there's space to explore, fallen logs to investigate, and you'll likely spot woodland birds if you're quiet enough.

I'd allow an hour and a half minimum, longer if you're the type to sit on a moss-covered stump with a flask. Come mid-morning on a weekday and you'll have it largely to yourself. Weekends can get busier with local runners and dog walkers.
