Bland's Plantation

Bland's Plantation is one of those East Yorkshire woodlands that doesn't announce itself loudly - which is rather the point. It's a proper forest walk, the kind where you can actually lose the sound of the car park behind you within minutes. The plantation itself is dense and atmospheric, with tall conifers creating a cathedral-like quality on even overcast Yorkshire days.

Walkers will find the most value here. The trails wind through without too much faffing about, and there's genuine woodland cover if the weather turns - which, let's be honest, it will. It's close enough to York that you could easily combine it with a day in the city, then slip out here for some actual air. The plantation has that slightly eerie quality older conifer forests can have, but in the best way.

Practically speaking, it's free to access, and you can knock out a couple of hours here without feeling rushed. Bring proper shoes though - the ground gets boggy in patches, and the needle bed can be deceptive underfoot. Summer weekends draw the usual crowd, but weekday mornings are genuinely quiet.

It won't blow your mind, but it's honest woodland walking within striking distance of York's medieval streets. That's a fair trade.
