Boddington Hill Fort

The earthworks at Boddington Hill don't announce themselves loudly. You're scrambling up a wooded slope near Tring when the ground suddenly shifts beneath your feet - banks and ditches that once formed Iron Age defences are now just lumps in the landscape, softened by centuries of soil and trees. It's a proper bit of archaeology, though you need to work for it.

What you're looking at are the remains of a hill fort, likely dating back two thousand years, now absorbed into the Chiltern countryside. The site itself is free to wander - there's no visitor centre, no explanatory boards, just the physical evidence if you know what you're seeing. Walk the perimeter and you'll trace the defensive lines; it's less dramatic than you might imagine, but that's rather the point. History here doesn't shout.

This appeals most to walkers with a bit of archaeology interest and families who fancy combining a ramble with something educational. Kids under eight will likely lose patience quickly unless you spin a good story about Iron Age warriors. Allow forty minutes to an hour, longer if you're genuinely keen on the period.

It works well as part of a broader Chilterns walking holiday. The nearby camping options - Hill Farm Camping and Norcott Campsite among them - make decent bases for exploring the area. You're close enough to Tring for supplies, far enough into proper countryside. Pair it with a walk through the Chilterns and you've got a decent day without needing anywhere else.
