Bodkin Hazel Wood

A patch of proper woodland that's easy to miss if you're just passing through Wotton-under-Edge. Bodkin Hazel Wood offers a genuine forest walk without the crowds you'd find at bigger tourist attractions - the kind of place where you might genuinely see a roe deer if you're quiet enough.

The wood itself is modest in scale but dense with character. Ancient hazel coppice dominates, twisted trunks and dappled light creating that close, intimate feel you don't get in plantation forests. Paths wind through without feeling manicured, which is either refreshing or a bit rough depending on what you're after. A good hour gets you round comfortably, or you can potter about for longer if you've brought a book and decent weather.

This is walker territory, particularly those after a local loop rather than a destination hike. History types will appreciate the coppicing heritage - this landscape has been managed for centuries. Families with young children might find it slightly dull if they're used to waymarked trails and visitor facilities, though there's something appealing about a wood that hasn't been over-interpreted.

No facilities on site that I'm aware of, and it's free to access. The real draw is its position as a genuine local wood, not a packaged experience. If you're based at Wixoldbury Farm Glamping nearby, it's a proper alternative to driving further afield for something more famous. Go in autumn when the light's best, or spring when the coppice is shooting.
