Bombur

The view from Bombur stops you mid-stride. You're standing on high ground above Bristol, and on a clear day the city spreads out below like someone's pulled back a curtain. It's one of those viewpoints that doesn't announce itself - you won't find crowds queuing for the Instagram shot - which makes it all the better.

The walk itself is straightforward. You're looking at moorland and open country, the sort of place where the wind picks up properly and your lungs get a proper working. From up here you can trace the shape of the city, pick out landmarks, watch the light change across the valley. It's the kind of spot walkers genuinely want to find rather than the kind tourism boards tell you to visit.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - The Batch or Wild Goose Glamping are both cracking spots - Bombur fits nicely into a day's walking. Not a long expedition, but enough to feel like you've earned the view. Families with confident walkers will manage it fine. Casual strollers might find the moorland a bit exposed and windswept, depending on the weather.

Go when the cloud's high and visibility's decent. Early morning or late afternoon light is proper worth timing for. It's free, naturally - it's a viewpoint, not a visitor centre with a gift shop. Allow a couple of hours if you're including the walk from nearby parking. Nothing fancy, just good honest countryside and a view that reminds you why you came to Somerset in the first place.
