Bossington Hill

The climb up Bossington Hill rewards you with one of the finest views across Exmoor and out towards the Bristol Channel. It's not a brutal slog - most people manage it in under an hour from the car park - but it's steep enough to feel like you've actually earned the vista when you get there.

What you're looking at from the top is proper Somerset countryside: rolling moorland, wooded valleys, and on a clear day the Welsh hills beyond the water. The walk itself takes you through farmland and open heathland, so it's straightforward enough for families, though younger kids might find the gradient tedious. Bring good boots - it gets muddy and rutted after rain.

This is the sort of place you'd add to a longer Exmoor walk rather than make a destination in itself. An hour up, twenty minutes enjoying the view, an hour back down. It works brilliantly if you're based at either Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Butlins Minehead - both within easy driving distance - and want to break up a park holiday with some proper walking. The views alone justify the effort, though I'll be honest: on a misty day you're just climbing a hill. Pick your weather.
