Botanic Gardens Aviary

The aviary at Botanic Gardens is a proper walk-through experience rather than a viewing gallery - you're actually inside the birds' space, which makes it feel considerably more intimate than your standard zoo enclosure. You'll see parakeets, pheasants, and various other species fluttering about at close quarters, and the older Victorian glasshouse setting adds genuine character to the whole thing.

It's absolutely worth a couple of hours if you're staying at Southport Caravan and Motorhome Club just down the road - Blowick itself is small, so this works well as part of a lazy afternoon rather than a major day out. Families with younger kids will get a kick out of the proximity to the birds, though it can get a bit crowded on weekends and the temperature inside the glasshouse climbs quickly in summer.

The gardens themselves are pleasant enough for a wander afterwards, though they're fairly low-key - don't expect anything as ambitious as what you'd find near Manchester. The real draw is the aviary itself and the slightly old-fashioned, unhurried feel of the place. Bring the kids, but don't plan your entire holiday around it.
