Bowden Pillars

Two weathered stone pillars mark what was once the entrance to Bowden House, a grand estate that vanished centuries ago. Standing sentinel in a field near Totnes, these Georgian gateposts are all that remain of a property that once dominated the South Devon landscape.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the melancholy romance of these lonely survivors. The pillars, crafted from local stone, still bear traces of their original grandeur despite decades of Devon weather. What strikes you most is their stubborn persistence - everything else has gone, yet here they stand.

It's a quick stop rather than a destination. Ten minutes will do it unless you're particularly drawn to Georgian architecture or enjoy pondering the transience of wealth and power. The surrounding countryside is lovely for a gentle walk, though the pillars themselves are easily spotted from the road.

Families staying at nearby Hoburne Devon Bay or Waterside Holiday Park might find it makes a decent leg-stretcher en route to Totnes proper. The town itself offers far more substantial attractions, but there's something rather touching about these forgotten gateposts. Children might be less impressed - there's not much to climb or explore.

Access appears to be free, though you'll need to respect any private land boundaries. Best combined with a visit to Totnes rather than treated as a standalone attraction.
