Bowen House nature reserve sits just outside Louth, a working landscape where you can actually see what conservation looks like rather than just read about it. This isn't a polished visitor attraction with a café and gift shop - it's a proper nature reserve where the wildlife comes first and humans tag along to observe.

You'll find yourself walking through habitats that support everything from woodland birds to amphibians, depending on the season. The trails are manageable rather than gruelling, making it decent for families who want their kids to spot something real without needing specialist knowledge. Spring and early summer are your best bets if you want to catch things actually happening - nesting season gets busy.

The reserve works well as a half-day addition to a park holiday rather than a destination in itself. Stewton Stars Hideaway is only two miles away, so if you're based there, it's an easy morning walk before breakfast. Lakeside Park and Parkdean Resorts' Sunnydale location are also within striking distance if you want to fit it round other Lincolnshire activities.

Bring binoculars and decent boots - the ground can get squelchy. Kids aged six upwards will get something from it; younger ones might lose interest once they've seen their first bird. Check opening times before you head out, as reserves can have seasonal closures. It won't take more than ninety minutes to do the main trails, which is probably about right for the experience on offer.
