Brackmills Country Park

The sprawling grounds at Brackmills Country Park give you proper open space without having to venture far from Northampton town centre. It's the kind of place where you can actually breathe - woodland paths wind through, there's water to look at, and you won't feel hemmed in by crowds even on a decent weekend.

You get a mix of habitats here: grassland, wetland, the works. Walkers will find the trails straightforward enough, though nothing dramatic. Birdwatchers and nature types genuinely benefit from coming - the wetland areas pull in decent species if you know when to look. Families with younger kids will manage fine for an hour or so, though it's not going to keep teenagers entertained all day. The park works best as an add-on to your stay at one of the nearby parks like Billing Aquadrome or Riverview Park, both within a couple of miles, rather than as a main destination in itself.

There's no entrance fee, which is worth knowing. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about walking the full circuit, less if you just want a quick leg-stretch. Spring and early summer are best for wildlife spotting. Winter's quieter if solitude appeals to you more.

It's local green space done properly - nothing fancy, nothing overdone. That's rather the point.
