Braehead stone circle (remains)

The stones at Braehead are what's left of a Bronze Age circle - and I mean left in the most literal sense. You won't find a neat ring here. What you get instead is a scatter of weathered boulders across moorland near Leslie, which is actually quite atmospheric once you accept you're not looking at Stonehenge. The largest stone stands about 1.5 metres high, and the site gives you genuine pause because it's genuinely old - we're talking 4,000 years old - and genuinely out in the open with no barriers, no interpretation boards, no coach parties. Just you, the wind, and some very serious antiquity. Walking here takes maybe twenty minutes from the nearest pull-in, and the moorland is lovely on a clear day. Rain transforms it entirely, turning the whole experience rather moody and isolating - which some visitors will find brilliant and others will find thoroughly depressing. Families will manage it fine if the kids can walk without complaint, though there's no playground energy here. History enthusiasts who love standing where Bronze Age people stood will find it worth the detour. Those after a casual stroll expecting manicured gardens should look elsewhere. It's free to visit and there's no set hours - it's just sat there on the moor doing its thing.
