Bragget

Bragget is a proper woodland stretch just outside Ripon in North Yorkshire, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's not dramatic or showy - no waterfall vistas or rare birds to tick off - but it's genuinely good for a couple of hours' rambling through mixed forest without bumping into half the county.

The walking here is straightforward. You've got paths threading through beech and oak, the ground soft underfoot most of the year, and enough variation in the terrain to keep it interesting rather than tedious. It's the kind of wood where you might spot roe deer if you're quiet, though no promises. The canopy closes in properly in summer, which makes it spot-on if you're escaping a scorcher of a day.

For families, this works better with kids old enough to actually walk rather than be carried. Under-fives will get tired; seven and up should manage a decent circuit. Walkers love it because it's low-fuss and properly accessible. History buffs might find the industrial heritage nearby more gripping.

Ripon itself is five minutes away, so if you're based at Riverside Meadows Caravan Park - which sits only 4 miles out - you can do Bragget as a half-day slot without overthinking it. Free to roam, no entrance fees. Come autumn, the colour's worth the journey. Winter's muddy but moody. Give yourself at least 90 minutes to do it justice rather than just dashing through.
