Bramfield Woods

You can lose a good couple of hours wandering through Bramfield Woods without seeing another soul. The woodland sits just outside Welwyn Garden City and feels properly remote despite being surrounded by civilization - ancient oaks and beech trees create this cathedral-like canopy that muffles all the road noise from the A1(M) beyond.

It's the sort of place where you actually notice things. Bluebells in spring, if you time it right. Scattered logs perfect for clambering over. The paths are well-maintained but muddy in wet weather - waterproof boots essential. There's no formal entrance or visitor centre, just woodland with public access, which means free and no faffing about with opening hours.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not dramatic scenery or views from hilltops - this is about being inside the woods rather than looking at them. An hour easy walk, two hours if you're someone who stops to examine ferns and fungi. Young kids might manage forty minutes before asking if we're nearly there yet.
