Brands Bay (Goathorn)

The walk out to Brands Bay via Goathorn feels longer than it actually is - partly because the path narrows and winds, partly because the reward at the end is genuinely worth the effort. You're heading towards one of Dorset's quieter coastal spots, where the shale cliffs meet the water and the crowds thin out considerably compared to Swanage's beaches just a few miles away.

What you get here is a proper sense of remoteness without needing to trek for hours. The bay itself is small, sheltered, and ringed with low cliffs that catch the afternoon light beautifully. It's the kind of place where you might actually see fewer than ten other people on a summer's day. Walkers love it because the approach is straightforward enough for most fitness levels, and families with older children will manage without complaint.

The geology is genuinely interesting - Dorset's layered coastal story is written into these cliffs if you look closely. There's no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Allow a good two hours there and back, more if you're the type to sit and stare at the water for a bit.

Stay at Swanage Bay View and you're perfectly positioned to combine this with the bigger attractions - Old Harry Rocks, Durlston Head - but Brands Bay works best as a quieter alternative when you've had enough of the postcards. It's not dramatic or famous. It's just... really nice.
