Brass Castle

Stone foundations and earthwork banks scattered across a windswept moorland hilltop reveal the remains of an Iron Age settlement that once commanded views across Wharfedale. Brass Castle sits about two miles southeast of Ilkley, accessible via a fairly steep climb through bracken and heather that'll have you puffing a bit by the top.

History buffs will appreciate the layout of what archaeologists reckon was a substantial fortified settlement, though don't expect towering walls or dramatic ruins. The stone circles and defensive ramparts require some imagination to bring to life, but the elevated position makes it clear why ancient Britons chose this spot. On a clear day, the panoramic views across the Yorkshire Dales are properly spectacular.

Families with older children who enjoy a good walk will find it rewarding, though little ones might lose interest quickly once they realise there's no castle to explore. Allow a couple of hours for the walk up and back, plus time to poke about the site. The path can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

Being so close to several holiday parks around Ilkley including Brown Bank Caravan Park and Olicana Park, it makes a decent half-day excursion. Combine it with a visit to Ilkley Moor or the town's Roman remains for a proper archaeological day out in this corner of West Yorkshire.
