Bredhurst Hurst, just outside Maidstone, is a working forest rather than a manicured country park, which means you're getting the real thing: muddy paths, fallen logs, actual birdsong instead of a gift shop soundtrack.

There's no visitor centre to speak of, and admission appears to be free, which is refreshing. Go when it hasn't been raining for a few days unless you're after the full bog-slogging experience. Allow at least ninety minutes to properly explore without feeling rushed.

If you're based at Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's barely twenty minutes away - ideal for breaking up a week of stationary holiday. Chegworth Mill Glamping is a bit further at just over six miles, but still an easy drive. The forest works best as a morning outing paired with lunch in Maidstone itself rather than a full day's commitment, though die-hard walkers might disagree.
