Breidden Hill

The walk up Breidden Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Powys borderlands - on a clear day you can see right across to the Shropshire hills. It's a proper little peak, just 486 metres, so don't expect Alpine drama, but the climb from the Welshpool side is bracing enough to feel earned.

What makes it worth the trek is the Iron Age fort at the summit. The ramparts are still visible if you know where to look, and there's something genuinely absorbing about standing where people stood two thousand years ago, scanning the same valleys. The cairn marker helps orient you once you're up there.

You're looking at roughly forty-five minutes to an hour up from the car park, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath. The path is steep in stretches but well-defined. It's the kind of walk that works brilliantly for families with older kids who don't mind a bit of graft, and for history types who'll spend an extra twenty minutes poking around the earthworks.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Bank Farm or Seven Oaks are closest - this makes a proper morning or late afternoon outing. Clear mornings are best; afternoon mist rolls in regularly and erases the views entirely. Free to visit, no facilities at the top, so take water. Worth the detour if you're staying in the Welshpool area, less so if you're just passing through.
