Bremen Stone

Standing on Cannock Chase near Rugeley, this weathered sandstone monument marks where legend claims a German bomber crashed during World War Two. The actual story is rather more prosaic - it's simply a boundary stone, probably Victorian, that's picked up the name Bremen Stone from local folklore.

Walkers stumbling across it during rambles through the heathland often look puzzled. There's no plaque, no explanation, just a rough-hewn block of stone that's clearly been there for decades. The surrounding landscape of gorse and birch trees is lovely enough, but the stone itself won't detain you for more than a few minutes.

Families staying at nearby Chase Camping at Tackeroo or Silver Trees Holiday Park might spot it during longer walks across the Chase. It's not worth a special trip, but if you're already exploring this corner of Staffordshire's finest stretch of countryside, it adds a small note of curiosity to your day out.

Dog walkers seem to find it more often than anyone else - their four-legged companions show absolutely no interest in local folklore. The stone sits there, solid and unremarkable, while the Chase spreads out around it in all directions. Chase Glamping Pods and the other holiday parks dotted around this area put you within easy walking distance, though you'll need to know roughly where to look or you'll walk straight past it.
