Brixham Breakwater

The breakwater at Brixham cuts into the sea like a stone arrow, and walking its length is something locals do without thinking twice - which is precisely why visitors should do it too. Built in the 1890s to protect the working harbour, it's now a proper spot for a ramble, especially when the light's good in late afternoon.

You get real working-port views here, not a sanitised tourist version. Fishing boats unload their catch, seagulls make an absolute racket, and if the sea's rough, spray flies across the walkway. It's free to wander out to the lighthouse at the end - about twenty minutes there and back at an easy pace. The vistas back towards the town and across to Berry Head are decent, though nothing that'll leave you breathless if you've hiked Devon before.

This works best if you're already in Brixham for the fish and chips or the Maritime Museum. Don't make a special trip just for the breakwater; it's a thirty-minute add-on, not a destination in itself. Families with young children will be fine for a short walk, but they'll get restless if you linger. The real charm is the authenticity - you're watching actual fishermen work, not performing seals in a theme park.

If you're based at South Bay Holiday Park down the coast, it's an easy drive or taxi ride into town. Go mid-morning before the afternoon crowds arrive, or late afternoon when the light softens everything and the fishing fleet returns.
