Broad Hill

Broad Hill might sound like something you'd skip over on the map, but it's actually one of Aberdeen's best vantage points if you know where to look. The walk up takes about forty minutes from the city edge, climbing through rough moorland that feels surprisingly wild for somewhere so close to urban streets. At the top - just over 300 metres - you get proper views across the Dee Valley and out towards the coast on a clear day. It's the sort of place where you notice how much sky there is. The path itself is straightforward enough, though it gets boggy after rain and there's nothing fancy waiting for you at the summit - no cafe, no visitor centre, just landscape. That's rather the point. Walkers will appreciate the relatively short haul and the genuine sense of elevation without needing fell-walking experience. Families with older kids can manage it fine, though younger ones might find the moorland stretch tedious. If you're staying at Seaview Caravan Park nearby, this makes a solid half-day outing - you're back in time for lunch without breaking a sweat. Go midweek if possible; weekends can feel busier than they should for a fairly quiet hill. Best in autumn or early spring when the light's interesting and the midges aren't about. The main thing is not expecting anything beyond what you get - a hill, a view, and the walk itself. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
