Broadgate Meadow Wood

You'll find yourself surrounded by towering pines and open woodland the moment you step into Broadgate Meadow Wood, just outside Preston. It's a proper working forest rather than some polished country estate - the kind of place where the light filters through in golden shafts and you can hear yourself think for once.

The woodland works well for a half-day walk if you're based at Gibsons Barn Caravan Park nearby. The paths are manageable and it won't take more than two hours to get a decent feel for the place. Families with primary school kids will find it engaging enough - there's plenty of exploring to do without it being too demanding, though pushing a buggy here would be a non-starter.

What you're really after here is peace and some decent air. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's precisely why it's worth the visit. You won't find crowds, which counts for something.
