Broadgate Wood

Broadgate Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Preston, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think away from the town buzz. The forest isn't vast, but it's dense enough that you'll feel properly immersed - tall pines and mixed broadleaf trees create a canopy that keeps things cool even on warmer days.

Walking the trails here takes between 45 minutes to an hour depending on which route you fancy. There's nothing strenuous about it. Families with younger kids will manage fine, though you'll want proper footwear as the ground gets muddy after rain. The paths are fairly well-trodden and marked, so navigation isn't a headache.

It's the sort of place where you go for the peace rather than a destination experience. Don't come expecting visitor facilities or cafes - there's none of that. What you get is woodland, birdsong, and a chance to stretch your legs. Honestly, if you're staying at Gibsons Barn Caravan Park nearby, it's a handy morning outing before heading into Preston proper.

Best visited on weekdays when it's quieter, though it's rarely heaving. Spring and autumn are genuinely lovely - less muddy than winter, less insect-bothered than summer. If you're after something with more dramatic scenery, you might find this a bit understated, but if you want an easy woodland escape that doesn't require advance booking or entry fees, Broadgate Wood does the job well enough.
