Brock Crags (summit)

The walk up Brock Crags isn't long, but it packs a proper punch once you reach the summit. You're looking at sweeping views across the Eden Valley and out towards the Lake District's eastern fells - on a clear day it's genuinely impressive. The peak itself sits near Penrith, so it's an easy add-on if you're staying at Ullswater Holiday Park for the week.

It's steep in places, especially the final push to the summit, but nothing that'll trouble anyone with reasonable fitness. Allow two hours return from the main path and bring decent boots - the ground gets boggy and the rocks can be slippy in wet weather. The exposed top means wind can catch you out, so check the forecast before you head up.

Walkers will find it rewarding rather than gruelling, which is why it appeals to keen ramblers who don't fancy a full Lake District expedition. Families with older kids (say, ten upwards) will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient and loose stone. It's not a tourist trap with a cafe at the top - you'll have solitude and views instead.

Go early morning if you can, especially in summer. The afternoon light is lovely, but the fell gets busier. There's no charge, no gates, no faffing about - just turn up and climb. Winter is possible but the summit becomes exposed and icy. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots.
