Brokerswood Country Park

Ancient woodland and open grassland make up this 70-acre nature reserve just outside Westbury, a proper working landscape rather than a manicured park. You'll find yourself walking through mixed deciduous forest - oak, beech, ash - with clearings that open onto wildflower meadows. The trails are well-marked but genuinely peaceful, the kind of place where you might spot woodpeckers or hear nuthatches calling from the canopy.

Brokerswood works best for walkers and anyone who enjoys spotting birds or insects. It's not a destination with facilities or attractions in the traditional sense - no cafes, no visitor centre, no playground. What you get instead is a couple of hours of proper countryside rambling without the crowds you'd find at bigger sites. Families with older kids will enjoy it; younger ones might run out of steam unless they're keen little naturalists.

The reserve is free to access, and there's no time limit, though most people spend between one and three hours here depending on which loops they tackle. Spring and early summer are lovely for wildflowers and birdwatching. If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Center Parcs Longleat Forest is closest at under six miles away - this makes an easy morning or afternoon escape from the busier attractions. Longleat House itself is nearby if you want something more structured afterwards. The woodland here feels genuinely old, though, and that's worth the short drive from Westbury.
