Brookfield Plantation

Brookfield Plantation is a proper working forest in Leicestershire, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a mixed woodland - deciduous and conifer - that spreads across decent acreage and offers genuine peace without the manicured feel of some country estates.

You're here to walk, mainly. The woodland paths wind through the trees, and on a decent day the light filters through the canopy in that way that makes you forget your phone exists. It's not mountainous terrain - this is the East Midlands, after all - so it suits families with younger walkers, older legs, or anyone after a meditative couple of hours rather than a strenuous hike. Bring decent boots though; it gets muddy.

Historically minded types might appreciate that it's a working plantation, so you see how these spaces are actually managed rather than just preserved as museum pieces. But this isn't somewhere with signage and interpretation boards. You come for the walk, the air, the birdsong.

Basecamp yourself at one of the nearby parks - Brightside Caravan Park (4.4 miles away) or the highly rated New Lodge Farm Bulwick (4.6 miles) - both are well-placed for exploring the wider area around Peterborough. Brookfield works best as a half-morning or afternoon activity rather than a full-day destination, but it's exactly the sort of breathing space you need between bigger attractions. Expect to spend two hours maximum wandering about. No facilities on site, so don't arrive parched or starving.
