Broughton Moor

The walk up Broughton Moor from Maryport is straightforward enough - nothing technical, nothing that'll catch you out - but the views westward across the Solway Firth into Scotland make the effort worthwhile. On a clear day you're looking at a proper panorama, the kind that reminds you why Cumbria's coast gets overlooked when everyone else is chasing Lake District peaks.

It's accessible moorland rather than dramatic fell walking. The terrain rolls, the paths are generally clear, and you won't need serious kit. Families with older children will manage it fine; the younger ones might find it a bit relentless underfoot, but nothing worse than a country park ramble. Allow a couple of hours there and back from town.

What makes it work as a park holiday destination is proximity to Maryport itself and those caravan sites clustered nearby - Harbour Side is literally 2.5 miles away with a five-star rating, and Greysouthen sits at 2.6 miles if you're after something with pods. Castle Guards Farm is bit further out at 4.8 miles but worth knowing about. Broughton Moor fits perfectly into a coastal break: morning walk, afternoon on the beach at Maryport, evening drinks overlooking the water. The moor doesn't demand a full day commitment, which is exactly what you want when you're based in a caravan.

Visit outside peak summer - spring or autumn light catches the coast brilliantly, and you'll avoid the weekend crowds. It's not Instagram gold, but it's the kind of place that makes you actually want to come back.
