Brown Caterthun

The walk up Brown Caterthun rewards you with one of those rare views that actually justifies the effort. From Edzell, it's a proper hike to this 299-metre peak, but once you reach the summit, the Aberdeenshire landscape rolls out in every direction - moorland, distant hills, the works.

What makes it worth the slog is the Iron Age hill fort that crowns the top. Multiple defensive rings still visible, built centuries ago. It's the kind of thing that makes you stop mid-pant and think about who once stood exactly where you're standing. The views across the Howe of the Mearns are genuinely spectacular on a clear day, which is the only time you'll actually see anything, so plan accordingly.

Walkers and history types will get real value here. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a push - it's not a gentle stroll. Allow three hours return if you're moderately fit, longer if you dawdle to take photos or catch your breath. It's free, which is just how it should be for a Scottish hill.
